AAA WCNY
Lowering Overhead Costs with Mobile Fleet Management Technology
Challenges
Serving 23 counties in upstate New York with a fleet of 1,200 vehicles, AAA Western and Central New York (WCNY) needed to streamline operational efficiencies after a merger with AAA Rochester in 2000. AAA WCNY was looking for mobile technology which would help the organization consistently meet AAA National's 30-minute response standard, unify previously separate communications networks and procedures, decrease space and personnel requirements, and secure a backup system in case of system problems.
Solution
AAA WCNY's chosen solution includes over 200 Mobile Data Computers (MDCs) from Mentor Engineering. The MDCs' internal modem facilitates communication between drivers and dispatchers and enables real time vehicle tracking using GPS. Over the Cingular Wireless network, messages are sent between drivers and dispatchers, and are displayed in the dispatch office using Campana's AXIS ERS software suite.
Results
Since implementing Mentor's wireless solution, AAA WCNY's response times are reduced and now consistently fall within national standards. The solution has allowed AAA WCNY to streamline their dispatching process and consolidate three dispatch centers into two, cutting down on overhead costs including salaries. "With the Mentor MDC and Cingular Wireless solution, the dispatch point is transparent. This move is saving us the annual salaries of eight dispatchers," say Jerry Hooven, Assistant Vice President in charge of Emergency Road Services at AAA WCNY.
