AAA Ohio Auto Club
Better Service with Lower Operating Costs
Challenges
AAA Ohio Auto Club services more than 850,000 members, and fields 250 to 300 calls each day. To meet the increasing demands on their towing and emergency service, the Club was looking for a mobile computing system to increase their operational efficiencies. Their goals included: decreasing radio time and conversations between dispatchers and drivers, increasing the speed of dispatching calls to the trucks, and consistently dispatching the closest vehicle to the scene.
Solution
To meet these goals, AAA Ohio chose a solution which includes 29 Mentor Mobile Data Computers (MDCs) equipped with built-in GPS, a smart and magnetic card reader, and DSP radio modem. D/2000 software supports dispatchers with client call management, while MapX software provides mapping functionality and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL). A private radio system facilitates communication between dispatchers and drivers.
Results
With the mobile fleet management system, AAA Ohio has not only improved operational efficiency and dispatching, but has also realized a measurable cost savings. By automating their dispatching process, they were able to cut dispatching resources in half, saving $50,000 each year. Mark Boyer, Director of Car Care Centers' Fleet Services and Project Manager for the mobile data implementation, says: "The resource savings have been great. We used to have two dispatchers per shift, and now we need just one. We've been able to handle the same number of trucks and calls with half the resources."
