New Levels of Efficiency with Mobile Device Management
Challenges
MCHRA Public Transit provided over 300,000 rides in 2008. In order to continually provide the most effective service to their customers, they needed to find a way to improve their operations. Traditional methods of managing transit operations were not allowing MCHRA to meet their service mandate in the best way possible.
"Before putting in this technology system, we used a pen and paper. The drawbacks of having done things this way were a lack of efficiency with our vehicles and the time it took to execute the schedules," says Cheryl Hunter, Operations Coordinator at MCHRA Public Transit.
Solution
To help MCHRA Public Transit achieve their goal of greater efficiency, Mentor Ranger® mobile computers were installed in their vehicles, while RouteMatch scheduling software was installed in the office to facilitate trip scheduling, dispatching, reporting and billing. Mentor Ranger works with the scheduling software to enable real-time messaging, electronic manifests, and same-day scheduling. MCHRA Public Transit also integrated Mobile Device Management (MDM) software into their technology solution for added benefit. Mentor's XMobile Manager® (XMM) software suite manages MCHRA Public Transit's Rangers by upgrading and programming the in-vehicle units remotely, minimizing downtime.
Results
Before implementing a technology solution, it was difficult for MCHRA Public Transit to get an accurate measure of what was going on with their vehicles. Since adding technology, MCHRA Public Transit has gained a more transparent view of their operations which helps them provide more efficient and reliable service to their riders.
In addition to their in-vehicle mobile computing and in-office dispatch software, a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution is making a big difference for MCHRA Public Transit's operations. Mentor's XMM mobile device management software upgrades and programs in-vehicle units, such as Ranger, remotely and over-the-air. XMM has been responsible for improving response time, reducing downtime and simplifying troubleshooting at MCHRA Public Transit.
"XMM has saved us the most time in solving problems. If I have a driver who says his computer screen is frozen or if his trips aren't showing up, I can go through XMM, easily find out what the issue is and resolve the problem," says Cheryl.
XMM works behind the scenes helping MCHRA Transit streamline their operations. Combined with in-vehicle mobile computing and transportation management software in the office, efficiency takes on a whole new dimension for this transit agency.
