Community Coach
Improving On-time Performance to Accomodate Growth
Challenges
In the face of rapidly growing transit demands, Community Coach, a paratransit provider serving Martin County, Florida, needed to maintain their high quality of service. Reliant on handwritten driver manifests, cell phones and radios for driver communication, this 37-vehicle fleet wanted technology that would help them more efficiently contact drivers if a schedule changed. They also wanted precise vehicle location information in order to give customers accurate arrival times.
Solution
To accomplish these goals, Community Coach chose Mentor Ranger®, a rugged in-vehicle mobile computer. Ranger facilitates fast, reliable, and secure communication between drivers and dispatchers. Mentor's solution also includes BBX, a wireless modem and telematic data collection device that lets dispatchers track vehicles with Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and GPS, and respond to driver and vehicle diagnostic issues. In addition, Mentor XGate® middleware compresses and sends messages between vehicles and Community Coach's back-office dispatch system, provided by StrataGen Systems.
Results
With the new technology, schedulers can monitor all routes on their computer screens, make changes if necessary, and notify drivers immediately— all increasing the organization's on-time performance. The technology has also improved operational processes by automating the reporting of mileage, start/stop times, no-shows and cancellations. Says Roger Eckert, Transit Director at Community Coach, "This, in turn, saves considerable time in the office since administrative staff no longer manually update trip records."
